Metro Manila remains on high alert amid Mindanao violence - police

MANILA -- The heightened security alert raised in Metro Manila last year remains in place, police said Sunday, citing a fresh surge of violence in the south.

Three people were killed last week after a homemade bomb exploded during a town festival in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat. The attack came less than a month after a van bomb ripped through a military checkpoint on the neighboring island of Basilan on July 31, killing 10 people.

"Laging nakatutok ang ating kapulisan for prevention of any crime that could happen, lalo na in relation to terrorism. We are in close coordination with concerned agencies, in particular sa intelligence community," Metro Manila police chief Director Guillermo Eleazar told reporters.

(Our policemen are constantly on the lookout for the prevention of crimes, especially those in relation to terrorism.)

Authorities have not monitored any particular threat to the region, but are urging the public to report any suspicious activity, he said.

The Islamic State has claimed the attacks in Sultan Kudarat and Basilan.

It was "highly likely" that the pro-IS Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) plotted last week's bombing in retaliation to state offensives, the military had said.

The long-running insurgency in the south has killed some 100,000 people by government count and stunted economic growth in the region.
